What is a domain name?
Put simply a domain name is the address that people use to find you or your company online; it's what you type in the browser's address bar to go to a specific website.
For example, our domain name is: http://www.kettlewoodweb.co.uk (in today's browsers, it's not necessary to type the symbols http:// ).
How do I buy a domain name?
Think of a name
Try and choose a name that is easy to remember, short, and if possible one that describes your website. For instance, B&Q use the domain name www.diy.com.
Check availability
You can do this by clicking on the Namesco link in the toolbar on the left. Simply type the name you want into the search box on their site and away you go!
Many of the popular domains will already be registered, so be prepared to use your imagination and consider alternative domain endings (like: .eu, .biz, .uk.com).
Register
You can either register the name yourself or we can do this for you. You usually pay for 2 years in advance and the price depends on the domain ending (.com is more expensive than .co.uk for example)
I have a domain name. What do I do now?
There are a number of options available to you. If you have no need for a website immediately, you can simply park the domain. In this case, you can also have any e-mail forward to your existing e-mail account, whatever that may be.
If you already have a website, you can choose to set up automatic forwarding so when your new domain name is typed in, it jumps to your existing site.
If you want to use you new domain name, you will need a hosting account. You can choose to use our services, or you can host your site with whoever you choose.
